Chapter Thirteen

The canopy of the trees from the Darklands met my eyes as we crested the last of the Smokey Mountains the next morning. I was in no hurry to head back into those woods. We had been lucky with Orlo, the alpha of the werewolves and his treaty with Cassiopeia. Something told me we wouldn’t be as lucky with the next creature we came across.

Planting my feet on the ground, I refused to take another step as the rest of the entourage passed by. The only one who noticed my little display was River, who paused by my side, brows furrowed.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“I’m not looking forward to heading back into that forest.” I gestured below with my head. “I mean, maybe it’s time that we know why we keep risking our lives?” Honestly, it seemed a bit overdue. I’d set out on an adventure that had quickly transformed into some kind of death wish.

“We’re protecting the world from the darkness.” He smirked, doing a passable impression of Jet, sulky expression and all.

A small chuckle fell from my lips. “You know what I mean.”

“Yeah,” River answered as he glanced down at our retreating group. “Maybe we should ask them when we next stop. I’m kinda sick of hearing about this mysterious darkness too.”

“Opal isn’t going to stop. You saw how annoyed having to stay for that meal made her, and then, how she complained about having to sleep there too. I honestly thought she was going to throw herself off the cliff edge while we waited for Kaida to shift to take us down the mountain.”

“Will you hurry up,” Opal snarled, looking over her shoulder as if on cue.

I raised my eyebrows at River to say I told you so. It would have been funny if I wasn't so angry at Opal. She was really beginning to boil my blood.

Grabbing River’s hand, I pulled him down what was left of the mountain until we had caught up to her. Dropping his hand, I scooted in front of Opal and placed my hands on my hips. No way she could miss me now. It was about time I stood up to her.

“What is it?” Opal basically growled at me.

Anger surged within me. She’d treated me and everyone else like dog maneuver this whole journey, despite that we were all here helping her. She might know about magic, but she had a lot to learn about manners.

Inhaling, I spit out everything I was thinking. “It’s time you tell us why we are doing this? We’re running all over the place to find some diamond, for some darkness I don’t even feel or see. You need to give me more, or I’m going home. I think the others deserve an explanation too…a proper one, not some vague wacko speech about invisible darkness.” Exhaling, I steeled myself for whatever answer Opal would give me.

“I’d hoped your grandfather’s desire for you to help us would hold out a bit longer.” Opal glanced over her should at Jet, who just shrugged his shoulders.
